Choosing which island to visit in Greece with kids is no easy decision to make. There are over 6000 of them after all! We’ve done the hard work for you though, by narrowing down the field down into what we consider a solid list of the 10 best Greek islands for families:
Let’s take a look at them in more detail.
Crete, Corfu and Rhodes
These can be thought of as the ‘big three’ Greek islands for families. They are incredibly popular with overseas visitors, and each one offers something a little bit different.
Due to its sheer variety, Crete is our number one recommendation for families. The island’s size (it’s the largest in Greece), means that there is a bit of something for everyone. If your idea of a vacation in Greece with kids is spending time at the beach, there are hundreds to choose from. If you would prefer to be more active and explore the great outdoors, there are superb hiking, kayaking, and cycling activities. Archaeology fans will love Knossos and other lesser known sites such as Gortyna, and there are countless family-friendly cultural workshops such as cooking classes, farm visits, and themed walking tours to choose from.
Corfu is another great recommendation when looking at islands to visit in Greece with kids. Whether traveling with toddlers or teens, attractions such as Corfu old town, the Aqualand Waterpark and beautiful sandy beaches will ensure that a good time is had by all. Whilst it is popular with tour groups and resort holidaymakers, it does still retain enough charm to make it a destination many people choose to return back to year after year.
If your kids have never visited a European castle before, then Rhodes should definitely be high on your list of islands in Greece to visit with your family. The Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes is a citadel which dominates the main town and harbour of the island, and is a fun and interesting place to explore. There is of course much more to Rhodes than just the town though – Wonderful beaches, archaeological sites, water parks, and plenty of outdoor activities. Take our advice – With over 300 days of sunshine a year, try to avoid the peak month of August. It’s VERY hot and crowded at this time. It’s far better to visit in May/June and September/October.
Naxos, Mykonos, Santorini
If you had an image in your mind of Greek islands with whitewashed buildings, blue domed churches, and cute looking villages, it probably came from photos you’ve seen from these three islands!
Although it is the less famous of these three islands, we believe it is actually more suitable for people looking for vacations in Greece with kids. It retains all of the aesthetic charm and beauty of the other two islands, but with far fewer tourists, and a more authentic feel. You can find out more about family vacations in Naxos.
A popular Greek island with the jetset crowd, Mykonos is perhaps more suitable for families with older children. Rent an ATV to explore the island, spend time having fun on the beach, and try any number of different water sports. Famed the world over for its iconic landscape, stunning scenery, incredible views, and magnificent sunsets, Santorini is a year around tourist destination. Spending 2 or 3 days here with the family is about enough time to see the major highlights and experience all that this beautiful island has to offer. There’s plenty for the kids to do as well, such as kayaking, sailing, and the interesting volcano tour.
Lefkada, Kea, Hydra, Astypalaia
These four Greek islands may not be as well known as the ones already mentioned, but each one is suitable for families in their own way.
This island is something of a hidden gem. Perhaps it’s because it doesn’t look like an island at all, connected as it is by a small bridge with the rest of the Greek mainland. Visitors will be pleasantly surprised by what awaits them though. Boasting some of the best beaches in Greece, unspoiled traditional villages and impressive landscapes, Lefkada is a place to add into your family road trip in Greece.
Little known to non-Greeks, many wealthy Athenians have summer homes on the island. Easily reached by Athens on a 2 day family sailing trip, its quiet beaches, picturesque ‘Chora’ and eco-tourism possibilities make it a great choice for families looking for off the beaten path experiences in Greece with kids.
Hydra is another Greek island that can be easily reached from Athens. Many people choose to visit on a day trip, but staying a few days really reveals the charm of the island. It has a unique mix of the glamourous and the traditional – a place where the kids can enjoy donkey rides, but where your next door neighbour may be a Greek TV star. Perhaps the island’s most appealing aspect though, is that it is traffic free. The perfect Greek island for families seeking a quiet break!
Finally, we have the almost completely unknown Greek island of Astypalaia. Best visited by families who have previously been to Greece and want to get to know the country on a deeper level, this is the place to come to experience Greece with kids like a Greek! The town square in the Chora is a focal point of entertainment, from where endless other opportunities radiate out. Eco-tourism, outdoor activities, watersports, and traditional cuisine are all waiting to be enjoyed. You can find out more in our guide to Astypalaia.
