Traditional Cretan Cheese Tasting and Making

If you are looking for a unique rural tour in Crete, Traditional Cretan Cheese Tasting and Making tour for families, one stands out above the rest. In the company of a guide and a shepherd, you will take a short hike through pasture lands in the mountains of Psiloritis. Along the way, you will learn about how cheese is produced, and perhaps be able to see the sheep and goats grazing in the fields.

After a few minutes, you will arrive at a typical shepherd’s house, where you can taste some cheese, and also take part in some cheese making. You will also discover how the cheese is matured in caves which are scattered around this area due to the geology. After you have finished making and trying your own cheese, we then head off to the Cave of Zeus.

The Cave of Zeus on the Nida plateau is one of several where the baby Zeus was said to have been hidden. If your kids love the Percy Jackson books, they will already know that Zeus is the most powerful of the ancient Greek Gods. Your guide can add to their knowledge, by speaking about some of the myths and legends connected with the cave and Zeus himself.

After leaving the cave, the tour continues on to the village of Anogia, where lunch is provided at a local taverna. Here, you can have your choice of local dishes and popular Greek cuisine. When lunch is over, it is time to return to the starting point a lot fuller than when the tour began!
