Top things to do in Athens with the family

First stop: Acropolis

The Athens family tour begins at the Acropolis, which was the very heart of ancient Athens. Walking to the top, you will be able to imagine just how difficult it would have been for invading armies to lay siege and conquer it.

You will see many monuments and buildings, including of course the world-famous Parthenon.

The kids will LOVE seeing how the buildings here used to look in the past, via the augmented reality program on the i-Pads given out during the tour.

Enjoy the views from the top of the Acropolis, and then make your way down to the bottom once more, from where your guide will take you to the Acropolis museum before the midday heat sets in.

Second stop: the Acropolis Museum

The Acropolis Museum is recognized as one of the most important museums in the world. It houses many artifacts and exhibits from all periods of human occupation in the Athens area. Whilst the exhibits are labelled, a knowledgeable family friendly guide is essential in order to help you understand the museum, and Ancient Greece on a deeper level.

The focus of the museum is of course on the Acropolis, with the top floor dedicated to the Parthenon and the missing Elgin Marbles now housed in the British Museum. Discover the story behind their removal, and the efforts to have them returned.

Worried that your kids might not enjoy the museum? Don’t be! The museum has ‘family backpacks’ available at the information desk. These offer a fun, interactive way for your kids to explore the museum… always under the guidance of our kid-friendly guide.

Third stop: historical Athens centre, Plaka

After the Acropolis museum, it’s time to explore the historical quarter of central Athens known as Plaka and Monastiraki.

The streets here are narrow and winding, with neo-classical architecture. A vibrant café culture sits side by side with ancient archaeological sites such as the Ancient Agora, and Hadrian’s Library. Your family-friendly guide can reveal some hidden secrets of Athens in the Plaka area, with the most important secret being where to find the best ice-cream!

Option: a visit to the Panathenaic Stadium, where the 1st modern Olympic Games took place, is a must, unless you are not too tired.

Athens is a fascinating city to explore, and if you only have limited time because you are arriving on a cruise ship, or just passing through, this family-friendly itinerary is perfect. Make the most of your 24 hours in Athens – See all the major attractions, discover hidden secrets, experience its vibrancy, and have fun with a local guide on this Athens family sightseeing tour.

Our 1-day ‘Athens with the Family’ Packaged Tour is ideal for those families who want to explore Athens but only have 24 hours (or less). This specific kid-friendly tour is focused on the historic Athens city centre and dives into all the must-see archaeological sites of Athens.

A kid-friendly guide will accompany you and your family through this tour which covers the impressive monuments of the Acropolis Hill such as the Parthenon, the Erectheion, the Propylaia, the Nike Temple.

Our tour guide continues to the Acropolis Museum where children will have the opportunity to engage themselves in interactive games.

Your Athens visit is not complete without a stroll in the charming neighborhood of Plaka and Monastiraki, where children will love playing around in the car-free alleyways.
