It is true that Corfu gets crowded during the summer due to its popularity but it is still definitely worth a family visit. Varied scenery and the variety of activities will keep you busy throughout your holiday.

We recommend the west beaches of Glyfada and Pelekas as they are particularly child friendly. The picturesque village of Pelekas is on a hill overlooking the sea and is an ideal location for accommodation and a good base for day trips. Its location is quite central and close to the town. There is free transport from the village to the beaches of Glyfada and Pelekas. The sunset as seen from the top of the hill, known as ‘Kaiser’s Throne’, is definitely not to be missed.

For further peace and relaxation we recommend Acharavi, Arilla, Nisaki, Saint Gordios and Gouvia. The sandy beach of Saint Gordios is ideal for children, and the resort also has a good selection of tavernas and accommodation. It is also not too far from the airport which is especially welcomed when you have been travelling with children on a long journey.

The town of Kerkyra (Corfu Town) is a must see. Its narrow alleyways (also known as kantounia), its traditional buildings and Venetian arches will enamour you.

Spend a day at the Aqualand Water Park, one of the best water parks in Europe. One thing for certain is that on that day your children will vote you the best parents ever!

Visit the Kanoni area which gives great views of the airport where you can watch planes taking off and landing. Nearby is the Monastery of Vlaherna as well as the famous Pontikonisi with its Monastery of Pantokratora.

The traditional dishes of Corfu such as ‘pastitsada’ and ‘sofrito’, as well as the Venetian recipes used for the preparation and cooking of fresh fish, are an absolute must. Don’t forget to buy some kumquat which is Corfu’s famous liqueur. ‘Sikomaides’ (pies made from figs, grape must, pepper and ouzo) and the famous ‘mantoles’ are a recommended goodbye gift to yourself for your journey home.

Families should know:

• Although there is local transport, we recommend you rent a car as the island is quite big and the transport not that reliable
• Always keep an eye on your children. The proposed beaches are child friendly but during summer months, and especially August, a calm sea can easily become choppy due to the ‘meltemia’, a local summer wind
• The sea is not particularly warm from May to July – at least not for Greek standards. However, from mid of August to October the temperature of the sea rises significantly
• How to get to Corfu: By ferry from Brindisi, Venice, Bari, or Ancona in Italy, or from Igoumenitsa in Greece (8 hours from Athens). By plane from Athens or charter flight from London, Paris, Amsterdam and Frankfurt.
