Hiking in Crete Through Forests, Traditional Villages, and Olive Groves

Go hiking in Crete in the company of an experienced local who can show you the wonders of the Cretan countryside. We can collect you from most of the major tourist towns on Crete, and drive you out to near Spili village where the hike will begin. To start with, we take a gentle walk up a hill, following a path through olive groves, oak trees and hollies. This area is full of fauna and flora, and our guide will point out many interesting things along the way, including the beehives where the local honey is collected.

Moving on from here, you might be fortunate to spot falcons, hawks, and even vultures flying in the air. Don’t worry though – They are not after you! This area is full of forest and wildlife, but is perfectly safe to walk through. Many botanists visit here as well, as the area contains many unique plants, including orchids. Depending on the time of year, you may be able to spot some growing in the wild.

Nature is not the only thing to admire on the hike though. The route goes through villages, and you can also visit an old monastery before finishing in the village of Kissos. This is a great place with many photo opportunities, especially the “old aqueduct”. It is in this village you will meet the vehicle, and then be driven to the nearby village of Vatos. Here, you are invited into a Cretan home, where you can hear about Cretan culture, history, and even family stories as you enjoy a traditional meal of local products. The perfect end to a wonderful day spent hiking in Crete!
