National Archaeological Museum

The National Archaeological Museum is the biggest museum in the country, with a huge range of collections covering all periods of antiquity.

The neoclassical museum building is impressive in itself; within it you can find exhibits dating from the prehistoric era to the Cycladic and Mycenaean civilizations. You will find sculptures, figurines and pots from the Archaic Period to the Roman Period as well as a section devoted to Ancient Egypt.

Make sure you get a map of the museum and select the specific collections you wish to see, depending on the age and the interests of your children. If your children are of a younger age, we believe the exhibits that will be more interesting for them are the Cycladic figurines and items from the pre-historic collection and the sculpture collection, including the impressive sculptures of Kourous and Kores.

For older children we suggest, in addition to the above, the Mycenaean sculptures from the pre-historic collection, the Egyptian collection and also the antiquities from Thira (Santorini) island, located on the top floor of the museum.

Families should know

For families with a buggy there is a ramp at the side entrance of the museum located at Vasileos Irakleiou St. If you do have a buggy, you might have some difficulty moving around the museum
The building, though neoclassical, has an elevator
During free entrance days the museum is normally crowded
Information concerning the programmes and activities at the museum is quite scant. We recommend that you call (+30)2132144890 for information about current activities and educational programmes prior to your visit
The museum does not have parking. If you arrive by car you might have difficulty finding parking in the surrounding area. There are several private parking areas close to the museum: at Bouboulinas St., Zaimi St. and Alexandras Avenue
The museum is really big and it is recommended that you do not visit all the exhibits in one go, as your children will certainly get tired and it is very likely that they will get bored. Get a map of the museum and select the exhibitions that you wish to visit according to the age and the interests of your children
It is likely that certain exhibitions in the museum will close earlier than the time the museum closes without prior notification, due to emergency works. It is advised that you ask the museum staff and confirm what time the exhibitions of interest are open, so that you organise your time effectively
